NYC Marathon Weekend

- “No, I’m not running the New York City marathon. I’m running Philadelphia three weeks after it.”
– “Really? Why?”
– “Because I didn’t get picked in the lottery.”

I swear, I’ve had this conversation like 83 times this week. It is really tough to see the whole city gearing up for this amazing race and knowing that I don’t get to be a part of it. Well, I’ll be part of it in the sense that I’ll be watching — I’m going to be out just past mile 19 which is conveniently about 50 feet from my house — but you know what I mean. It just would have been so amazing to run my first marathon here in this city that I love so much. I have to admit, I’m more jealous than I should be of everyone that gets to run on Sunday. Of course, I still wish you all nothing but the best. It looks like it’ll be good weather and so I’m looking forward to hearing and reading about everyone’s great races.

As for me, I have a 22 mile run to deal with tomorrow morning. It’s the last of the long runs before a 3 week taper. I’ll be doing my twenty mile loop of Manhattan with an extra mile up and back in Morningside Heights. I already ate a good, solid meal of whole grain rotini with red sauce and now I’m off to the living room to watch the documentary about Fred Lebow that everyone’s been praising so much, Run for Your Life, for inspiration, then heading to bed early and (hopefully) getting my full 8+ hours tonight. No gorilla costume this Halloween…

  • Hey, Thanks for your well wishes. I know it must be tough to be a spectator instead of a runner this weekend. I’ve been there so I know. Still, have a great time and harness the energy and the fervor. It’ll do you good in Philadelphia.

Good luck on your 22 mile run. It’s not too bad of a weather day to do a long run. Good luck with rest of training/taper and have fun too in your upcoming marathon.
