Wednesday evening, I headed to the bathroom at work carrying my backpack full of running clothes. It’s a small bathroom and the only real spot to change is inside the stalls. So, I picked one at random, hung my bag on the door, and started changing. As I pulled out my shirt, I saw my socks go flying through the air and directly into the toilet. Shit! Quickly, I ran through the options:
- Flush them and then run home in my work socks. I look down. Crap. They’re black dress socks. That won’t work…
- Flush them and then run home with no socks. I knew this wasn’t really a possibility. My feet were already destroyed by blisters and the thought of running without socks was about as appealing as, well, something really unappealing.
- Flush them and scrap the run. My legs hurt, it’s hot, my socks are in the toilet. Maybe it’s a sign from the gods…
- Reach into the toilet, pull them out, then wring them out as best as I can. At least the toilet water is clear…
I ended up going with number 4. Glad I did too. Although the wet feet were uncomfortable at first, I soon stopped noticing as the heat and humidity combo soaked the rest of me just as badly. I washed my hands real good, then scrubbed my feet as soon as I got home. Seems to be no harm done and I got a great 9-miler in.

Ha! But, ewwwwwwww.
haha, pretty funny!!!! was there no modells or anything around though? I would have walked sockless to the nearest store. If you saw the bathroom at my work, you wouldn’t want to touch anything there… !
Oh man, that would have been a better idea. There’s a Modell’s like two blocks away. I’m an idiot.
I figured you’d go for holding them under the hand dryer. But maybe they don’t have those in men’s rooms…
I’ve put them in microwave before. except they come out steaming hot. I wouldn’t have thought of Modell’s either…I have like 3 sets of spare gear in my office (all the B team stuff I don’t like to wear, but want to keep around and don’t want to toss. Shoes I don;t like, shorts that chafe, etc. So I have extra socks too.) As a veteran of walking home from office like 5 times, always helpful to keep gear in the office. I can’t wait for fall either!
Hand dryer would have worked, but we don’t have one. Just paper towels. And, I definitely didn’t think to try the microwave either. I’ll bring in a spare pair of socks for my desk next time…
